Prominent leaders from northern Nigeria are convening a crucial summit to revitalize the region’s political and economic influence in the lead-up to the 2027 elections.
The League of Northern Democrats, a group comprising former governors, senators, and notable figures, is spearheading this initiative.
The summit, scheduled to take place in Kaduna, aims to address the region’s political trajectory, economic growth, and security challenges.
It will serve as a platform for key leaders, thinkers, and influencers to come together and chart a new course for the North.
According to Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, Protem Chairman of the LND and former governor of Kano State, the summit will focus on evaluating the challenges confronting the North and creating a document outlining possible solutions to tackle these problems.
He emphasized that the initiative is apolitical and not specifically focused on the 2027 elections, but rather a long-term effort to address the region’s pressing issues.
The move comes after the 2023 general election saw power shift to the southern part of the country, with President Bola Tinubu’s victory marking the end of eight years of northern leadership under former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The recent #Endbadgovernance protests, which saw demonstrators holding Russian flags and calling for the overthrow of the democratically-elected president, have also highlighted the need for northern leaders to come together and address the region’s challenges.
