The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a man and his wife following the discovery of the lifeless bodies of their twin infants inside a drainage channel in Okpoko, Ogbaru Local Government Area of the state.
The incident, which has triggered off a chain of reactions on social media, was confirmed in a statement issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga.
According to the police spokesperson, the bodies of the twin babies were discovered in the early hours of Sunday along Cooperative Street, Nwokedi area of Okpoko, after concerned residents alerted security operatives.
SP Ikenga said officers attached to the Okpoko Divisional Police Headquarters immediately responded to the report, secured the scene and commenced investigations to unravel the circumstances surrounding the shocking incident.
The police statement disclosed that preliminary investigations led detectives to the biological parents of the deceased infants, who were subsequently arrested and taken into custody for questioning.
While the identities of the suspects were not immediately disclosed, the Command noted that the couple is currently assisting investigators as efforts continue to establish what transpired and the circumstances that led to the death and abandonment of the babies.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, described the incident as a disturbing display of man’s inhumanity to fellow man and a grave assault on the sanctity of human life.
The police chief commended the operatives for their swift response and professionalism, which resulted in the prompt arrest of the suspects shortly after the matter was reported.
He stressed that every child deserves care, protection and the opportunity to live, assuring that the Command would pursue the matter to a logical conclusion and ensure that anyone found culpable faces the full weight of the law.
The Police Public Relations Officer further stated that investigations are still ongoing and that the Command would make further information available as the case progresses.
