The Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum (PDP-GF), under the leadership of Senator Bala Abdulkarim Mohamed, the Governor of Bauchi State, has expressed deep concern over recent comments made by H.E. Barrister Nyesom Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Governor of Rivers State.
In a widely circulated news story, Wike allegedly made threatening remarks aimed at governors within the PDP, sparking fears about the unity and peaceful coexistence within the party.
In a strongly worded statement, the PDP-GF described Wike’s comments as “unbridled, irresponsible, and without ambiguity unacceptable.”
The forum emphasized that such remarks undermine the efforts to foster peace, collaboration, and mutual respect among party leaders and members. “It is rather unfortunate that this is coming from someone who was once a member of this highly revered forum as a former governor,” the statement read.
The forum highlighted the irony of Wike’s actions, noting that he had once benefited from the very traditions and support structures of the PDP-GF during his tenure as governor. “A tradition Wike tremendously enjoyed in his days of travail as governor,” the statement pointed out.
The governors were firm in their stance, asserting that the forum’s collective decisions, particularly those regarding the affairs of the PDP in Rivers State, are not subject to revision by any individual, regardless of their position.
“We wish to emphasize that neither is the position of the Forum personal nor does it by any stretch of the imagination undermine the relevance of any stakeholder in the party,” the PDP-GF stated. The forum reiterated its commitment to upholding party discipline and ensuring that Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State receives all the privileges due to him as an elected official on the PDP platform.
The PDP-GF concluded by reaffirming its unwavering support for the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP and its dedication to maintaining the unity and integrity of the party.
“We are irrevocably committed to working with the National Working Committee (NWC) of our great party, the PDP, in ensuring that Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State is conferred with all the privileges he is entitled to as a Governor elected on the platform of our party, both at the state and national levels.”
This development marks a significant moment of tension within the PDP, with the governors signaling that any attempts to disrupt the unity of the party will not be tolerated. The coming days will likely see more developments as the PDP navigates this internal challenge.
