The Special Adviser to the Governor of Anambra State on Youth Reformation, Dr. Nelson Omenugha, has called on inmates of the Awka Medium Security Custodial Centre to embrace hard work, patience, integrity and lawful means of livelihood as pathways to personal transformation and a better future.
Dr. Omenugha made the call during a working visit to the custodial centre, where he also reiterated the commitment of the Anambra State Government to youth development, rehabilitation and the reintegration of reformed individuals into society.
The visit was disclosed in a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Anambra State Command, CSC Francis Ekezie.
According to the statement, the Governor’s aide and members of his entourage were received by the Officer in Charge of the Awka Medium Security Custodial Centre, DCC Innocent Amaechi, alongside the Command Legal Officer, DCC C.K. Abiakam.
Welcoming the delegation, the custodial centre’s management commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his administration’s sustained investment in youth development and empowerment initiatives across the state.
The authorities of the centre also appealed for stronger collaboration between the state government and the Nigerian Correctional Service, particularly in the areas of vocational training, rehabilitation and the reintegration of inmates who are preparing to return to society.
Addressing the inmates, Dr. Omenugha identified the quest for quick wealth as one of the major factors pushing many young people into crime and other social vices, warning that such pursuits often result in avoidable consequences and wasted opportunities.
He urged the inmates to use their period of incarceration as an opportunity for reflection, self-improvement and character reformation, while assuring them that their present circumstances would not necessarily determine their future.
The Governor’s aide also explained that the Soludo administration’s Youth Reformation Agenda seeks not only to empower young people economically, but also to instil values capable of fostering responsible citizenship, discipline, productivity and integrity.
Speaking during the visit, Dr. Omenugha, who toured the vocational centres, educational facilities, workshops and other rehabilitation units within the custodial facility, commended officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service for their dedication to the rehabilitation and transformation of inmates.
He further pledged to explore avenues through which inmates who have acquired vocational skills could receive support to establish small-scale businesses after regaining their freedom, while also promising to facilitate the provision of equipment to strengthen skills acquisition programmes at the centre.
The Governor’s aide particularly expressed admiration for what described as the artistic talents and creative works produced by inmates at the Arts, Handicrafts and Sculpture Workshop, describing their ingenuity as proof that every individual deserves an opportunity to rediscover and maximise his or her potential.
The visit later took an emotional turn when one of the inmates presented Dr. Omenugha with a handcrafted bead necklace as a token of appreciation and goodwill.
The presentation, which attracted applause from officials and inmates alike, underscored the broader message of hope, redemption and transformation that characterised the visit.
The engagement further highlights the growing collaboration between the Anambra State Government and the Nigerian Correctional Service in advancing rehabilitation programmes, empowering young people and promoting social reorientation across the state.
