CP Nnanna Oji Ama has been posted to take over as the new Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, following the promotion and retirement of the immediate-past Commissioner of Police in the state, AIG Ikioye Orutugu.
The posting of the new Police Commissioner was announced on Wednesday, August 5, by the Police Service Commission (PSC), which also approved the postings of seven other Commissioners of Police to various state commands across the country, as well as the posting of AIG Auwal Musa Mohammed as Commandant of the Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil, Kano.
CP Ama’s posting, which makes him the 36th Commissioner of Police to head the Anambra State Police Command, was confirmed in a statement signed by the Head of Protocol and Public Relations of the Commission, Mr. Torty Njoku Kalu, which said the new postings were aimed at sustaining operational exigencies.
According to the statement, under the new postings, CP Afolabi Wilfred Olutokunbo was deployed to Abia State, CP Ayodeji Faniyan to Plateau, CP Saka Ajao to Bayelsa, CP Ajo Ordue to Cross River, CP Nnanna Ama to Anambra, CP Patrick Daaor to Edo, CP Tijani Murtala to Jigawa, and CP Samuel Etaifo to Delta State.
Before their new assignments, Olutokunbo served as Commissioner of Police in charge of Administration, Training and Development; Faniyan headed Administration at the Police Cooperative in Lagos; Ajao was CP Administration at the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Gombe; Ordue served as Commissioner of Police, INTERPOL, Abuja; Ama was CP Intelligence, while Daaor was CP Administration at the Force Intelligence Department, Abuja.
The Police Service Commission charged the newly-posted officers to remain committed to the rule of law, while also urging them to maintain the highest level of professionalism, and discharge their responsibilities with neutrality, diligence, and integrity.
This reporter, Izunna Okafor, gathered that CP Ama, whose official appointment as new Anambra CP was first announced on July 28, is highly regarded as a seasoned police officer with decades of experience in intelligence gathering, criminal investigation, operations, administration, and community policing.
A native of Edda in Ebonyi State, he attended Government Secondary School, Owutu Edda, before proceeding to Government College, Umuahia. He later obtained a degree in Psychology from the University of Jos in 1991.
His career in the Nigeria Police Force began after his training at the Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil, from where he was commissioned as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in 1996. Ama was promoted to the rank of Commissioner of Police in July 21, 2025.
Prior to that, he had served in different strategic capacities, including as Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Rivers State, Personal Assistant to the Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Commander of Mobile Police units in Uyo, Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Abuja, Area Commander in Nnewi, and Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Intelligence.
Optimism abounds that his previous experience as Area Commander in Nnewi may prove valuable, given his familiarity with the security landscape of Anambra State.
His posting comes at a time when the state continues to intensify fights against kidnapping, armed robbery, cult-related violence and other crimes.
Meanwhile, good wishes and congratulatory messages have continued to pour in from different parts of the country, especially from his home state of Ebonyi, where many have described the appointment and posting as recognition of his years of dedicated service to the nation.
Expectations are also high that the incoming commissioner will build on the massive achievements recorded by his predecessor, AIG Orutugu, while strengthening intelligence-driven policing, community partnerships, and other strategies aimed at improving security across Anambra State.
