Transfer: Marseille Mayor Kicks Against Greenwood Signing

Sharing is caring

The mayor of Marseille has urged the city’s football club not to sign Mason Greenwood after they had a bid accepted for the Manchester United forward.

Multiple sources have confirmed that Marseille have had an offer accepted for the 22-year-old that could reach about £27m.

It is thought personal terms still have to be agreed to complete the transfer.

Criminal charges against Greenwood, including attempted rape and assault, were dropped in February 2023.

Mayor Benoit Payan told French radio station RMC he will ask Marseille president Pablo Longoria not to sign Greenwood.

“I do not want my club to be covered in shame,” said Payan. “It is not acceptable.”

In August, United said following an internal investigation that it had been “mutually agreed” Greenwood should continue his career away from Old Trafford.

The England international spent last season on loan with Spanish side Getafe and still has a year left on his United contract.

Sources revealed Greenwood had a short meeting with senior United officials on Monday when it was reinforced he needed to leave the club.
