In his bid to ensure free flow of flooding this raining season and as proactive measure against the ravaging flood as recorded recently within Iweka road, Ziks Avenue and other areas, Governor Chukwuma Soludo has at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Onitsha South Local Government area, flagged off desilting of drainages.
The governor who was ably represented by his Deputy, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, while inspecting the project after the flag off exercise, suggested ways to rechannel some portions which might be militating against the smooth flow of the flood
He expressed satisfaction with the equipment and workforce on ground to ensure the smooth flow of the flood and commended the council chairman, Hon Emeka Orji for his dedication to duty, stating that the Mayor was fully prepared for the work.
The Mayor in his response thanked Mr Governor for his visit despite his tight schedules, disclosing that desilting of drainages is an annual event in preparation for the rainy season.
“We flagged off with an excavator, tools and tippers and I thank God it was very successful and it is ongoing. We would do it for the next one, two weeks to months because the sakamori and drainages in Onitsha South are quite huge. it is not something to be done within one or two days,” he further explained.
Orji urged residents, business owners and passersby to stop indiscriminate disposal and flight tipping of waste along water/drainage channels across Onitsha South Local Government, warning that defaulters if caught would be sanctioned.
The council mayor categorized three areas to desilt to include, 1, Premier bypass, Premier bypass down, Church Street, Church Street /Port Harcourt Road, Sakamori phase 1, Long Sakamori to Nwangene, Sakamori phase 2, and Nwangene River Niger.
Others are Ziks Avenue, Sakamori/ Housing Estate, Sakamori/ Ochanja, Creek Road , Iweka Road.
Category 2 are, Mbonu Ojike, Head bridge /Ogbo Osisi, Expressway/ Housing Estate, Housing Estate, Port Harcourt Road/ FB, Expressway /Lake Petroleum-Agofure Park, and Niger Street.
Others are Bida , Modebe Avenue , Mbanefo Street, Upper Iweka/ Flyover area on both sides and Port Harcourt Road.
