Medicine Academy Advocates More Funding For Heath Insurance

Academy also called on the Federal government to recognize its importance in health care sector

The Nigerian Academy of Medicine, NAMED, is to pursue national policies to improve wellbeing of Nigerians, through improved funding for the health sector, by fulfilling the 2001 Abuja declaration of 15% of National budget to the sector.

The President of the academy, Prof Samuel Ohaegbulam stated this at the Academy’s annual lecture and induction ceremony in Abuja.

Prof Ohaegbulam explained that it is important that Nigeria embraces the internationally recognized way of funding healthcare which is compulsory heath insurance.

The Nigeria Academy by virtue of her unique position, the quality and status of fellows in the society, must do everything possible to drive this project to rescue the health sector”

It also sought the support of the Minister of the FCT to allocate land for the Academy to set up a deserving office in the FCT.

In a lecture entitled interpersonal Relationship in the health sector, the guest lecturer, a former Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole, emphasised the need to bring together various healthcare professionals, each with their unique skills and perspectives, to create an efficient healthcare system..

He identified challenges of Nigeria’s healthcare workforce to include medical Tourism, Incessant strikes, brain drain and Demographic Inequity in the distribution of health workers which often time live rural and remote areas underserved.

According to him, healthy inter personal relationships have many benefits for both patients and healthcare workers, such as the improvement of health outcomes by enhancing communication, coordination, and decision-making among different health professionals.

Other benefits are improving the workplace by reducing conflict, increasing confidence, and fostering innovation among health care workers as well as promoting ethical practice by respecting the contributions and values of all discipline

High point of the event was formal admission of 25 fellows into the Nigeria Academy of Medicine.
