Following the restoration of the accreditation of the Abia State University Teaching Hospital by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), the state governor, Dr Alex Otti has vowed not to allow such to happen again.
The governor spoke, yesterday, when the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Ngozi Okoronkwo, informed him of the restoration of the accreditation after the Accreditation Team of the MDCN re-inspected the teaching hospital facilities and other prerequisites and certified them.
With the restoration, the university can now graduate medical students for the next five years; increase its admission quota from 120 to 150 per session; renew training of 60 house officers per year for the next four years and even increase the number. It will also it employ more full time consultants.
The governor, while receiving the MDCN Accreditation Team at his Nvosi residence, said “Never again shall we lose accreditation because it’s a big shame, though I was not governor then, I saw it coming and I wrote to the former governor”.
Leader of the MDCN Team , Dr Nnaemeka Nwakanma commended Otti for uplifting medical infrastructure in Abia State, particularly in the Teaching Hospital and other health institutions in the state.
He said MDCN was impressed with Otti’s achievements within his short period in office, specially commended him for dedicating 20% and 15% of the state’s 2024 budget to education and health respectively, described this as the highest ever in the history of budgeting in Nigeria.
