Passengers and crew members aboard an Enugu Air flight on Thursday escaped what could have been a major aviation disaster after the aircraft veered off the runway while landing at the Benin Airport, ending up in a nearby bush.

This was corroborated by videos that started trending on social media shortly after the incident, showing the aircraft resting off the runway amid vegetation, while passengers hurriedly disembarked and moved away from the scene, with many expressing shock over the frightening experience.

The Enugu Air also confirmed the incident in a statement released on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, explaining that the aircraft experienced what was described as a runway excursion, while operating into Benin on Thursday.

According to the airline, all passengers and crew members safely disembarked from the aircraft immediately after the incident, while the aircraft has since been secured.

Enugu Air also disclosed that the relevant aviation authorities had been notified in line with established aviation safety procedures, adding that investigations has commenced to determine the circumstances surrounding the occurrence.

The airline explained that a technical assessment of both the aircraft and the incident was underway, noting that the development could result in temporary adjustments to some of its flight schedules.

It assured affected passengers that they would be contacted directly and provided with the necessary assistance.

Reaffirming its commitment to safety, the airline stressed that the safety of its passengers, crew members and flight operations remains its highest priority, while also appreciating passengers for their patience, understanding and cooperation following the incident.

Enugu Air was launched barely one year ago, on Monday July 7, 2025, with its inaugural flight taking off from Akanu Ibiam International Airport. The Enugu state-owned commercial airline was established barely two years after the current administration of Governor Peter Mbah came on board.
