It was a dramatic and scintillating scene on Tuesday night in Awka, the capital city of Anambra State, as two podgy and plumpy young men, Michael Ilomaduabuchukwu (popularly known as Mmanwụ) and Martins Chinonso took to the street to test their strength and speed in a running competition.

The jocular and highly comical running competition, which took place at the front of Paradise Hostel, Off St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, saw the bare-chested men bet on their sprinting ability, after a brief argument.

This culminated in a boardman setting and officiating challenge for them, on who could first sprint to a heap of chippings tipped about 100 meters away from the starting point, gather some chippings and sprint back.

Consequently, what began as a light-hearted argument quickly transformed into a full-blown spectacle, drawing scores of amused onlookers, passersby, and residents of the area who gathered in anticipation of what many described as an “unusual but entertaining showdown.”

At the blast of the unofficial starting signal, both contenders charged forward with surprising agility, their heavy frames bouncing in rhythm as cheers and laughter filled the air. While Martins Chinonso initially took an early lead, it was Michael Ilomaduabuchukwu who demonstrated greater stamina and coordination as the race kicked off.

Reaching the heap of chippings almost neck-and-neck, the duo scrambled to grab the required pieces of chippings before making the return sprint. However, it was at this critical point that Ilomaduabuchukwu surged ahead, maintaining a steady pace despite visible exhaustion, while Martins began to lag behind.

Amid loud cheers, chants, and hilarious commentary from the crowd, Mmanwụ crossed the finish line first, clutching his chippings triumphantly and boasting in excitement, as he emerged the winner of the keenly contested street race. Martins, who followed closely behind, also tried to smile, as his strength was almost exhausted to the red bar. He also did not even gather any chippings as was instructed as part of the criteria for determining the winner in the competition

The atmosphere afterward was erupted with jubilation, banter, and playful mockery, as supporters spectators exchanged words over the outcome of the race and how Martins exhausted so soon and crashed to the ground to rest and regain his strength after all the boasts.

Meanwhile, after he reluctantly accepted defeat, he started boasting again that he would defeat Mmanwụ next time. After much boats and debates, the second edition of the competition was consequently scheduled for Wednesday at 6.pm at the same venue with cash bet and prize for whoever wins.

Don’t miss out!
