The Anambra State Fire Service has averted what could have resulted in yet another major disaster in Onitsha, following the crash of a fully loaded fuel tanker along the ever-busy Enugu Road on Tuesday morning.

The incident, which occurred directly in front of OVL Filling Station at No. 18 Enugu Road, triggered swift emergency response from the Fire Service to forestall a possible explosion.

According to a press statement released by the Media and Publicity Unit of the Anambra State Fire Service and made available to this reporter, the crash happened around 11:15 a.m. after the tanker reportedly lost balance due to a deflated tyre.

The situation reportedly caused panic among nearby residents, motorists, and business operators, given the deadly trend of tanker-related fire disasters recorded in various parts of the state in recent years, the most recent of which happened over the weekend near the Ekwusigo Local Government Headquarters, and resulted in loss of life and destruction of shops.

The gallant operatives of the Anambra State Fire Service, however, averted any outbreak from resulting in the Tuesday crash.

According to the press statement, upon receiving the distress call, the Fire Service immediately deployed operatives and two firefighting trucks to the scene, which arrived promptly and commenced safety operations to stabilize the situation, secure the environment, and prevent any possible ignition of the highly flammable fuel content.

As of the time the statement was issued, the Fire Service operatives were still on the ground managing the emergency and ensuring there was no leakage or spark capable of causing a fire outbreak. The statement noted that the proactive response was part of the Service’s ongoing strategy to minimize losses and protect lives and property across the state.

The Fire Service also used the opportunity to issue a strong caution to motorists, particularly drivers of heavy-duty vehicles, to ensure that all parts of their vehicles are thoroughly inspected before setting out on any trip. It warned that poor vehicle maintenance, especially tyre condition, remains a major contributor to road crashes involving fuel tankers and articulated trucks.

The Agency further reassured the public of its commitment to rapid response and professional emergency management across Anambra State.
