Following Security prohibition of the Traditional Sallah Emir’s Durbar activities, the 16th Fulani Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi ii, has strategically abandoned Horses Ride but uses Vehicles to pay Sallah Homage to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf at Government House Kano.
The Emir Muhammadu Sanusi ii, who also changed the normal routes of State Road to Government House while carrying out the traditional Hawan Nassarwa, drove in convoy of Vehicles to undertook his Tradition.
Explaining the difference of what Emir Muhammadu Sanusi ii, did with the normal Hawan Nassarwa, a Professor of History and who was a Former Head of Department History, Bayero University, Kano, Professor Tijjani Naniya, hints that before 1940 the Emir as head of Native Authority, NA, only visit the Resident and returned to his Palace.
He said, “before 1940, there was no Wajen Kano that is outskirts the City, and the Emir as the head of NA he will paid only his visit to the Resident at Government briefed on the yearly happenings in the City and returned to his Palace”.
“But by 1940 and when outskirts Kano that is Wajen Kano was created and there were People who though must of whom were Hausas but not of Kano extraction the Emir needed to go round and see them, the present day Hawan Nassarwa using Horses was introduced”.
Professor Tijjani Naniya, hints that, what the Police banned was Horses Procession in any form, and but Emir Muhammadu Sanusi ii was using Vehicles to pay Homage to the Governor which is not in anyway violation or breach of the Security position.
He said, “what was stopped is for the Emir to ride on horses and pass through State Roads, that for sure would create a problems but now that he has returned to the original means of the Hawan Nassarwa tradition there is not violation”.
“And the Emir is only coming to Government House as against the usual Hawan Nassarwa that he will ride horses go round Kano to greet everybody and return to his Palace”.
Professor Naniya, hints that,”in compliance with the Security position Sanusi has avoid large crowds escorts and simply drive his few Cars to Government House in the 1903 Traditional Sallah Festivities”.
