What could be best described as divergent reactions have been sparked off on social media, following the circulation of a viral video showing a man who constructed an electric car that also utilizes solar energy in Nnewi, the automobile hub of Anambra State.

The 20-second video captures the innovator test-running the vehicle in a public space, as onlookers and passerbys gathered in awe and admiration.

The car, which is prominently red and black in colour, bears a bold inscription “SOLAR” on its body, signifying its reliance on solar energy as a key component of its functionality. In the video, the constructor is seen driving the vehicle to a motorcycle spare parts market in Nnewi, where it was jokingly announced that the car was available for sale.

The invention has since generated mixed reactions from netizens and observers, with many hailing it as a remarkable innovation that deserves government and private sector support. Some social media users described it as a groundbreaking feat that aligns with the global shift towards renewable energy and eco-friendly transportation. They commended the inventor for his ingenuity and called on relevant authorities and well-meaning individuals to assist him in refining and commercializing the product.

“This is exactly the kind of creativity that should be encouraged. The government should support this man with funding and technical assistance to perfect this innovation,” Ada Nnewi commented.

Also commenting, Mark Ogbonna, wrote “Nnewi has always been Nigeria’s hub of innovation. This is a brilliant development, and with the right investment, this car could compete with electric vehicles from foreign manufacturers.”

However, amid the applause, some skeptics raised concerns over the trustworthiness and roadworthiness of the vehicle. Some questioned whether the car had undergone standard safety and durability tests to ensure its suitability for commercial use. Others wondered about its efficiency, longevity, and ability to withstand Nigeria’s road conditions.

“This is impressive, but can the car function reliably on major roads? What about its battery capacity and overall durability?” one social media user queried.

Another Netizen, Emmanuel Okenwa expressed doubt on the durability and viability of the vehicle, saying, “It’s a nice concept, but what is the range of this car? How long can it run on a single charge, and is it really viable for long-term use?”

These differing opinions notwithstanding, the invention has been counted a plus for Ndị Nnewi where Chief Innocent Chukwuma also make the Innoson Motors, bringing to more light the potential of local automobile manufacturing in Anambra and the need for more investment in indigenous technological advancements. Many have urged the government to identify and support such local innovators and manufacturers who could contribute to Nigeria’s industrial and economic growth.
