Vice President Kashim Shettima has extended heartfelt apologies to the families of victims affected by the recent military airstrike in Silame Local Government Area, Sokoto State, which tragically claimed the lives of 10 civilians.
The airstrike, conducted on December 25, targeted a logistics base of the Lakurawa insurgent group. However, innocent civilians in Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities were mistakenly caught in the crossfire.
In a statement released by his media aide, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as one of those rare and unfortunate moments in the fight against terrorism where civilians bear unintended consequences.
Vice President’s Apology
“I must say we are sorry and dismayed at the civilian casualties incurred and the excruciating pain that ensues in these extremely difficult times,” Shettima stated. He offered condolences to the government and people of Sokoto State, particularly the bereaved families, acknowledging the tragedy’s emotional toll.
He further praised the dedication and sacrifices of the armed forces, emphasizing that incidents like this underline the complexities of modern warfare. Shettima called on the public to continue supporting military operations, stressing the importance of unity in the fight against terrorism.
Shettima highlighted the challenges faced by soldiers working in high-risk environments, often making split-second decisions in their quest to protect civilians and dismantle terror groups. He urged the people of Sokoto and other regions affected by terrorism to provide valuable intelligence to help the military improve accuracy and precision.
“Security is not one man’s business. Together, we will surely make a difference as a people,” he remarked, emphasizing collective responsibility.
Federal Government’s Commitment
Reiterating the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to eliminating terrorism, Shettima assured Nigerians that efforts to restore peace and security across the country remain unwavering.
“Let me assure you that the administration of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is hell-bent on weeding out what is left of terror elements in the country,” he stated, pledging to create an environment where Nigerians can work, farm, and live without fear of attacks.
Moving Forward
The Vice President’s remarks underline the administration’s resolve to prioritize civilian safety while conducting military operations. His apology and call for collaboration signal a renewed focus on precision and intelligence-led strategies in combating terrorism.
The Sokoto bombing serves as a reminder of the complexities of warfare and the urgent need to balance military objectives with the protection of civilian lives.
