The Wife of the Governor of Ebonyi State, Her Excellency, Chief Mrs Uzoamaka Mary-Maudline Ogbonna Nwifuru, has set in motion, a human-interest foundation to develop Ebonyi women and make their lives better.

The foundation known as “Better Health for Rural Women, Children Internally Displaced Persons (BERWO), will solely cater to developing potentials in Ebonyi women, and the youths at large. The flag-off of the First Lady’s pet project, BERWO, will take place on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, at the Christian Ecumenical Centre, Abakaliki by 11am.

Besides in-depth concentration on women development, BERWO will focus on ‘multi-purpose youth hub, improved healthcare services for women, children and youth, reduction of Gender Based Violence (GBV) and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) cases, empowerment for women and youths, supporting the internally displaced persons and persons with disability, and work with other partners within and outside Ebonyi State, to identify funding opportunities, all meant for the improvement of the lives of our women, children and youths.’

The special assistant to the Governor on New Media, Leo Ekene Oketa released a statement reiterating the birth of the humanitarian initiative.

His statement reads, “We need our young ladies and girls in Ebonyi State, to step up their interests in skill development and measured participation in politics, so to have a chain of competent succession of these opportunities graciously exposed in Ebonyi State today.

Our girls must begin to develop needed skills, professional enough to take them above board. It is a call for them to fasten their seat belts, ready to rev, so that when opportunities come, they will be ready.

We will all appreciate to have them move from State levels of excellence to National icons, alongside the male folk”.
