In a recent political development, five members of the House of Representatives, including Hon. Sir Tochukwu Chinedu Okere from Imo State, have defected from the Labour Party (LP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The announcement was made today, December 5, 2024, by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, during a plenary session in the green chamber.

The lawmakers who joined the APC alongside Hon. Okere are:

Hon. Donatus Mathew (Kaduna State),

Hon. Bassey Akiba (Cross River State),

Hon. Iyawe Esosa (Edo State), and

Hon. Daulyop Fom (Plateau State).

This defection marks a major shift in the political landscape, as the APC strengthens its representation in the National Assembly. Hon. Sir Tochukwu Chinedu Okere, whose defection was formalized on the floor of the House, is expected to align with the APC’s agenda in advancing governance and development.

The Speaker commended the lawmakers for their decision, emphasizing the inclusiveness of the APC and its commitment to national unity and progress.

This move has sparked discussions about the Labour Party’s dwindling influence within the legislative arm and the APC’s growing appeal to lawmakers across the federation.

The development is expected to impact the dynamics of legislative engagements as the APC consolidates its majority in the House of Representatives.
