The Abia State Government has initiated survey activities at the proposed site for the Abia International Airport in Nsulu, pledging to compensate land donors in accordance with the provisions of the Land Use Act.

Speaking to journalists, the Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Mr. Chaka Chukwumerije, assured that a comprehensive enumeration process will be conducted, and all affected landowners will receive appropriate compensation for their contributions to the project.

The statement came in response to a recent protest by some members of the donor communities over concerns about being excluded from the process.

Mr. Chukwumerije highlighted that extensive negotiations were held between the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mr. Caleb Ajagba, the Special Assistant on Lands and Housing, Mr. Okorougo Aji, and representatives from the seven donor communities in Nsulu.

He added that a mutual agreement was reached, allowing joint survey activities to be carried out by the Office of the Surveyor General of Abia State and youth leaders from the donor communities.

“At the start of the survey on Saturday, November 30, 2024, some members of the Umunna Nsulu community raised concerns about not being included. The Chief of Staff promptly addressed their grievances, reassuring them that anyone feeling left out would be adequately engaged,” the Commissioner stated.

The government reiterated its commitment to ensuring fairness and transparency in the execution of the airport project while addressing the concerns of all stakeholders.
