The Nigerian Military Deploys Troops in Ondo Ahead of Gubernatorial Election
On Thursday, the Nigerian Military announced it will deploy troops to Ondo State in preparation for the governorship election scheduled for November 16.

This move aims to strengthen security measures in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force to maintain peace and order during the electoral process.

In a statement, Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Operations, explained that military personnel will work alongside the police, who are leading security efforts for the election, to ensure the process is conducted smoothly and without disruptions.

Additionally, he highlighted the role of the Nigerian Air Force, which has already begun providing logistical support to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by transporting sensitive electoral materials via air to ensure secure and timely delivery across the state.

“Troops have been deployed in substantial numbers to support the police in maintaining a safe and orderly environment during the Ondo governorship election on November 16, 2024,” General Buba stated. He emphasized that the military’s presence is intended to create a secure atmosphere that allows voters to participate without fear of harassment or intimidation while deterring any individuals aiming to disrupt the polls.

The deployment of both ground and air support underscores the military’s commitment to upholding democratic processes and ensuring that citizens exercise their voting rights safely.
