According to 2023 data from the Ministry of Police Affairs, kidnapping for ransom has become the most-reported crime case in Nigeria under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
StatiSense revealed this information on its X account, showing that kidnapping cases have surpassed murder, banditry, terrorism, and armed robbery in terms of reported incidents.
A zonal analysis of the data indicates that kidnapping is the most reported crime in the North Central (38.51%), North East (42.11%), North West (49.71%), South East (30.61%), and South-South (36.73%) regions, except in the South West, where murder cases are most prevalent (29.87%).
This trend comes despite President Tinubu’s promise to address insecurity in Nigeria.
Recent incidents, such as the abduction of a family in the Ushafa community of the Federal Capital Territory, the kidnapping of 20 medical students in Benue State, and the abduction of 287 pupils from a government secondary school in Kaduna State, highlight the ongoing challenge of insecurity in the country.
