The Nigeria Police Force has revealed that its recent raid on the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) complex in Abuja was aimed at gathering evidence against an international suspect accused of threatening Nigeria’s democracy.
According to Force spokesman Muyiwa Adejobi, the August 7 raid targeted a specific office on the second floor of the complex, where the suspect was allegedly housed by the labour union.
Adejobi emphasized that the raid was not directed at the NLC headquarters on the 10th floor, but rather at the suspect’s office, where incriminating documents were recovered.
The police claim that the suspect, who has been accused of being a “subversive element,” poses a significant threat to Nigeria’s democracy. Adejobi stated that the suspect has been linked to a syndicate with multiple foreign identities, including Russian and British connections.
The raid has been met with condemnation from local and international rights groups, including Amnesty International. However, Adejobi maintained that the operation was necessary to prevent the suspect from carrying out plans to “run down Nigeria” and destroy its democracy.
The police have launched a forensic investigation into the suspect’s activities and are seeking the NLC’s cooperation in the probe. Adejobi hinted that the suspect is a frequent traveler and that the police are working to apprehend him.
The raid has sparked controversy, with some accusing the police of targeting the NLC and its recent #EndBadGovernance protests. However, Adejobi denied any connection between the raid and the protests, insisting that the operation was solely focused on gathering evidence against the suspect.
