Heavily armed security personnel on Wednesday night stormed the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) headquarters in Abuja on.

The raid, which occurred around 8:30 pm, saw the operatives break into the Labour House, ransacking the bookshop on the second floor and carting away hundreds of books and publications.

According to Benson Upah, the NLC’s head of Media and Public Relations, the security operatives claimed they were searching for seditious materials linked to the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests.

However, the NLC has condemned the raid as a gross violation of their rights and a new low in security operations.

The union has demanded the immediate withdrawal of security operatives from their headquarters and denounced the raid as an attack on democracy. “Even during military rule, NLC secretariats were never invaded and ransacked by security agents.

Today is a sad day for our democracy,” the NLC said in a statement.

The raid comes six days after the start of the #EndBadGovernance protests, and the NLC is yet to ascertain the full extent of the materials taken from their offices.”
