Sharing is caring

The jury in a New York Court  has found former US President Donald Trump guilty of falsifying business records to commit election fraud.

This historic decision makes Trump the first former US president to be criminally convicted.

He was found guilty of all 34 counts he faced. Unanimity was required for any verdict.

Trump will now be sentenced on July 11.

Speaking outside the court, Trump claimed that the conviction was a “disgrace” and that he is “a very innocent man.”

He also insisted the trial was “rigged” and that the judge was “conflicted” and “should never have been allowed to try this case.”

Trump was at the centre of a scheme to cover up “hush money” payments to buy the silence of a porn star in the days before the 2016 election.

The ex-president could face prison, but legal experts say a fine is the more likely outcome.

The verdict comes as he campaigns to defeat Joe Biden in November’s election and return to the White House

The court heard from 22 witnesses over six weeks, including Stormy Daniels, whose alleged sexual encounter with Trump was at the centre of this case

Trump stood accused of concealing a payment made by his former lawyer to buy the ex-adult film star’s silence shortly before the 2016 election

The 12 jurors deliberated for two days before reaching a unanimous verdict
