History Has Been Made Once Again By A Nigerian who hails from Anambra, Dr. Chukwudi Okeke for becoming the first ever Black Ethnic Minority Councilor to be elected as Chairman of Oxfordshire Cherwell District Council.
Dr. Okeke was elected Chairman of Oxfordshire Cherwell District Council during the Annual Full Council meeting on 22nd of May 2024.
Cherwell District Council is a local government district in Oxfordshire, England, where the Chairman of the Council is regarded as the ‘First Citizen of the District’ and the ‘Ceremonial Head of the Council and the Cherwell District.
Recall that on Friday 6th, May 2022, he made history at Oxfordshire Cherwell District Council for becoming the first ever black ethnic minority councillor to be elected on to the Council.
Speaking after his election, Dr. Okeke, thanked his fellow Councillors for the great honour they bestowed on him in becoming the first citizen of the Cherwell District, pledging to embrace the role with passion and to be fair and supportive to all members.
According to him “Dr Okeke said today is a remarkable day for the Cherwell District. I made history two years ago by becoming the first Councillor from a black ethnic minority elected to this Council. History has been repeated today as I become the first member of the same background to hold the position of Chairman of Cherwell District Council.
Speaking further, “he said that he got into politics due to his desire for a healthy society. A society where everyone irrespective of gender, ethnicity, religion, sexuality, and social background can thrive. Cherwell is a fantastic area to live, work, and do business, and I am eager to continue promoting it as such, he said”
Dr Okeke who lives in Oxfordshire with his family was born in Amaokpala town, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State. He holds a BEng (Hons) and PhD in Automotive Engineering from Oxford Brookes University, UK, he leads CAE Design in the Automotive Design Industry.
