The Abia Commissioner of Police, Kenechukwu Onwumelie has confirmed the arrest of two males over the kidnapping of an Abia State University Uturu, lecturer Prof. Godwin Emezue on the 26th of January.
Professor Godwin Emezue, was kidnapped while purchasing fuel at a filling station at Umuopara in Umuahia South LGA, close to his country home.
During the incident, the hoodlums had confiscated his wife’s ATM card, dragged the Deputy Vice-Chancellor into a Lexus SUV, and drove away with him.
However, the ABSU don was later released by the abductors on Tuesday night after spending 11 days in the kidnappers’ den.
According to the CP, “They are in our custody, two of the people concerned. Investigation is ongoing”.
Earlier on Friday night, the state governor, Alex Otti while interacting with newsmen disclosed the arrest, stating that the leader of the gang was picked up at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos while trying to board a flight to Turkey, adding that the second mastermind was arrested in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
According to the Governor, the two had since been returned to Abia state to answer for their crimes, stating that the arrest was made possible by the efforts of Operation Crush, a joint security team set up by his administration which is yielding the desired results in rooting out criminals.
