Dr. Chimeziri Anderson, President of the Nigerian Optometric Association and Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, announced that more than 1,000 individuals in Anambra State will undergo free eye check-ups for glaucoma.

During a press conference held at the Heilton Leisure Resort in Awka over the weekend, Dr. Anderson highlighted the importance of the National Delegates Congress & Glaucoma Summit.

He mentioned that this annual event not only shapes the future of the association but also provides an opportunity to fulfill their corporate social responsibilities as a charitable organization. This year, they have organized free glaucoma screenings for the people of Anambra State.

Dr. Anderson, an expert in community eye health epidemiology, explained that glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that gradually leads to blindness. He referred to it as the “silent thief of sight” because it often shows no symptoms or pain until vision loss occurs.

Prevention is key in tackling glaucoma, as highlighted by Dr. Anderson. He emphasized the importance of health promotion through preventive measures. By adopting the right lifestyle choices and following a proper diet, individuals can significantly reduce their risk of developing glaucoma.

International reports suggest that 80% of blindness cases are avoidable through lifestyle choices. Taking the necessary steps and making informed decisions can make a significant impact on reducing the prevalence of glaucoma and other preventable causes of blindness.
