Non-teaching staff in Nigerian Universities have made good their threat to embark on a warning strike to demand for their unpaid salaries.
The workers under the aegis of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, and the Non-Academic Staff Union, NASU, today declared a 7-day warning strike to demand the payment of four months of withheld salaries of their members, following the 2022 nationwide strike.
The decision was part of the resolution of the joint action committee of the two unions, after a meeting which held in Akure at the weekend.
President of SSANU, Mohammed Ibrahim, said this in a press briefing in Abuja on Monday.
Ibrahim noted that the decision to embark on the warning strike was taken as a last resort since several protest letters and other communications with the Federal Government did not result in the payment of the withheld salaries.
The seven day warning strike is expected to commence immediately after the Joint Action Committee, JAC comprising SSANU and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, NASU, ratify the date this week.
The development followed the recent nationwide protests by the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, over current economic hardship, which has led to high cost of living across the country.
