The National Agency For Food and Drug Administration and Control ( NAFDAC) has commenced mop up of alcoholic drinks in packaging materials it banned in all parts of Enugu.
The agency disclosed that it banned alcoholic drinks in sachets and small bottles below 200ml, adding that the timeline it gave to companies has elapsed.
NAFDAC visited over six cottage companies in different parts of Enugu State where they got information that they were producing hot alcoholic drinks in sachets and bottles.
The agency embarked on the exercise last at Nsukka, Udenu Local Government Areas and some parts of Enugu State Capital.
At Udenu and Nsukka Government Areas, the agency placed two cottage companies that were producing banned products on hold and invited them to visit it’s office at Asaba , Delta State for further questioning.
At Enugu, the agency visited some places and discovered that some companies suspected to be producing banned products were no longer in existence.
Addressing journalists at the end of the exercise, the Team Lead, Investigation and Enforcement Directorate, NAFDAC, South East and South South Zones, Asaba, Delta State, Wafar Elam, disclosed that the agency will continue to mop up alcoholic drinks in sachets and small bottles that it had already banned.
He noted that the agency banned alcoholic drinks in sachet and 100 ML bottle because of the abuse of the substance and health implications.
Wafar reminded Nigerians that NAFDAC has banned alcoholic drinks in sachets and bottles below 200 ML, adding that the exercise, which he said will be continuous, is being carried out in all the states of the federation.
He disclosed that during the exercise at Nsukka and Udenu, the agency discovered that some of the companies had in their possession some banned packaging materials.
Wafer added that the aim of the exercise is to mop up all the all the alcoholic drinks in banned packaging materials as well as to unveil the perpetrators for necessary action.
