Buckingham Palace has announced that King Charles has been diagnosed with a form of cancer, although the specific type has not been disclosed. The diagnosis came to light during recent treatment for an enlarged prostate, ruling out prostate cancer. The King has commenced “regular treatments” as of Monday and will be scaling back on public duties during this period, as per the Palace statement.
Despite the diagnosis, the 75-year-old monarch remains optimistic about his treatment and anticipates returning to full public duty at the earliest opportunity. Details regarding the cancer’s stage or prognosis have not been shared.King Charles personally informed both his sons of his diagnosis, and the Prince of Wales has been maintaining regular contact with his father. Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, currently residing in the United States, has spoken with his father and plans to travel to the UK to see him in the coming days.
The King, having returned to London from Sandringham in Norfolk, has commenced outpatient treatment. While he will temporarily suspend public appearances, he will continue fulfilling his constitutional role as head of state, which includes handling paperwork and private meetings.
It is understood that his weekly meetings with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will persist and be conducted in person, unless advised otherwise by medical professionals. In the event that the King is unable to carry out official duties, there exists a constitutional mechanism wherein “counsellors of state” can be appointed to act on behalf of the monarch.
