The Nigerian Army (NA) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) have formed a robust partnership aimed at expanding the frontiers of peace and stability throughout Nigeria.
This collaboration will focus on providing security, humanitarian assistance, and upholding international humanitarian law (IHL) principles.
Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), welcomed the ICRC delegation led by Mr. Yann Bonzon at the Army Headquarters in Abuja.
During the meeting, Mr. Yann expressed the ICRC’s commitment to delivering humanitarian aid in conflict zones worldwide, highlighting their ongoing efforts in the North-East region of Nigeria, where the Nigerian Army is conducting counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations.
He praised the cordial working relationship between the ICRC and the Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS), which has enabled the NRCS to fulfill its responsibilities across the country.
The COAS expressed his gratitude to the ICRC for their dedication in providing vital humanitarian assistance, which has significantly improved the living conditions of conflict victims in affected areas.
He also emphasized the Nigerian Army’s commitment to promoting knowledge and application of International Humanitarian Laws (IHL) within their operations.
The COAS highlighted that the NA has incorporated IHL protocols into their teaching guides for all personnel, ensuring that non-commissioned officers, senior non-commissioned officers, and junior officers are well-versed in international best practices.
This partnership between the Nigerian Army and the ICRC holds great promise in fostering peace and stability throughout Nigeria. Together, they will continue to work tirelessly to make a positive impact on the lives of those affected by conflict.
