In a major operation, troops from the 192 Battalion, 81 Division, Nigerian Army, successfully apprehended a suspected transnational drug syndicate.
Acting on credible intelligence, the troops intercepted a Sienna 2001 Model Space Bus, loaded with 296 wraps of illicit substances believed to be Cannabis Sativa. The operation took place on Sunday, January 14, 2024, along the Balogun border in Ogun State.
The vigilant troops conducted a thorough search of the vehicle, uncovering multiple hidden compartments filled with the suspected marijuana.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the illicit substances were transported from Benin Republic, passing through the Ilara border communities en route to Ifo, Ogun State. Shockingly, it was discovered that the drug traffickers had spent five months concealing the substances for delivery to their clients.
Two suspects, Mr. Adigun Olatunji, 54 years old, and Mr. Michael Atanda, 18 years old, both residents of Ilara Imeko in Afun LGA of Ogun State but residing in Benin Republic, were arrested in connection with the crime. After their failed attempt to bribe the troops with twelve million naira, they have been taken into custody for further necessary actions.
Alongside the suspects, various items were seized, including a Benin Republic National ID Card, a Nigerian National ID Card, two small Itel mobile phones, a Benin Republic driver’s license, a Benin Republic International Passport, six Benin Republic SIM packs, two Benin Republic SIM cards, a Nigerian driver’s license, a power bank, and an MP3 player.
This successful operation highlights the unwavering commitment of the Nigerian Army in the fight against drug trafficking and transnational crime.
The interception of this drug syndicate and the seizure of a significant quantity of illicit substances will undoubtedly disrupt their operations and contribute to a safer society.
The Nigerian Army remains dedicated to maintaining peace, security, and the well-being of the Nigerian people.
