Members of a local security outfit known as “Say No to Crime” have killed no fewer than two members of the unknown gunmen, who attempted to burn down the newly rebuilt police station in Agwa Community in Oguta local government area of Imo State.
Agwa police divisional headquarters had witnessed several attacks in the past with many of of its officers being killed.
It was recently rebuilt through the efforts of the people of the community after they successfully expelled the gunmen that had held the town to ransom since 2021.
However, on Wednesday April 17, 2024, some yet-to-be-identified assailants, invaded the town and started robbing residents of the Umukpo village in Agwa.
It was gathered that after they robbed people without resistance at Umukpo village, they attempted to set ablaze the newly rehabilitated Agwa Police Division.
A village source disclosed that on getting the hint of the attack, the vigilante group led by Onyebuchi (aka Magabush) in a remarkable display of bravery and vigilance, swiftly mobilized and laid ambush close to the police station.
“As the assailants made their way towards the Agwa Police Division, unaware of the ambush, they were met with a barrage of gunfire from the vigilant security personnel.
“The gunmen, upon invading the Umukpo community, unleashed a wave of terror, firing indiscriminately and robbing traders.
“Their brazen actions came to an abrupt halt when they encountered the prepared resistance of the local security.
“In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, two of the gunmen met their demise while the others fled into the cover of the surrounding forests, abandoning their vehicles.
“The swift and decisive action of the local security not only prevented the arson of the police division but also ensured the safety of the community”, one of the village sources said.
It was further gathered that the residents of the community had been in joyous mood since the incident happened, expressing their gratitude for the bravery displayed by the security outfit.
