Senate Rejects Bill to Include Anambra in NDDC, Anambra Civil Society Reacts

Sharing is caring

The Senate, on Wednesday, rejected a bill that aimed to include Anambra State as a member of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

In response, Prince Chris Azor, Chairman of the Anambra Civil Society Network (ACSONET), expressed his disagreement with the Senate’s decision.

He called on the people of Anambra, the Southeast, and all patriotic Nigerians to condemn this unpopular action and support the bill’s re-presentation for adoption and passage.

The bill was sponsored by Senator Tony Nwoye, who argued that Anambra, as an oil-producing state receiving 13 percent derivation, should be included in the operational scope of the NDDC. However, during the debate on the bill’s second reading, many senators disagreed with Nwoye’s argument.

They pointed out that being an oil-producing state is not the sole criterion for NDDC membership, as the agency primarily serves the interests of states in the Niger Delta region.
