OCDA Demolishes Illegal Structures In Nekede Community

The Owerri Capital Development Authority (OCDA) has carried out a significant demolition exercise in Nekede, near the back gate of the Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Imo State.

The operation, which was executed under the leadership of OCDA General Manager, Hon. Frank Nkem Nzewodo, and the Special Adviser to the Governor on OCDA Matters, Prince Amanze Njemanze, targeted unauthorized developments on a government-designated oil development site.

The reclaimed land had earlier been officially transferred to the Imo State Government by community leaders after oil deposits were discovered in the area. A formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed, and appropriate compensations were paid to the affected community, thereby legally ceding the property to the state.

Despite the clear documentation of ownership and official acquisition processes, some individuals went ahead to erect illegal structures, including hostels, shops, and makeshift buildings, without obtaining necessary approvals from relevant authorities.

In adherence to due process, OCDA issued multiple eviction notices to the unlawful occupants, starting with a 21-day quit notice, followed by a final 7-day extension.

Upon the expiration of the notice period, the agency carried out the demolition on June 31, 2025.

Speaking during the exercise, the OCDA management emphasized the agency’s unwavering commitment to upholding the Owerri City Master Plan, preserving public infrastructure, and ensuring that government-acquired lands remain protected from encroachment and abuse.

The agency also reiterated its stance that while development is welcomed, it must be guided by proper planning, legal compliance, and respect for government directives.
