Following the expiration of eviction notices, the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI) has commenced clearance operations under the Idumota Bridge, tackling illegal structures.
The Commissioner for Water Resources and Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the development, emphasizing the government’s commitment to restoring order in the area.
“Our dedicated KAI officers have moved in to sanitize the environment and remove elements that pose security threats,” Wahab stated.
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has also deployed staff to the site, efficiently carting away debris and ensuring the corridor remains clean and accessible.
While many residents have applauded the initiative, citing improved safety and order, others have expressed concerns about the displaced traders who have lost their makeshift shops.
“This move will enhance security and ease movement in the area,” said a resident, while another lamented, “Where will the affected traders go now?”
The government has yet to announce any resettlement plans for the displaced traders, but officials maintain that the operation aligns with the state’s broader urban renewal agenda.
