Lagos Ban Flogging Of Students In Public And Private Schools

Sharing is caring

In a bold move to promote a non-violent approach to discipline, the Lagos State Government has officially reiterated its ban on flogging students in both public and private schools. This policy, which was initially implemented in 2022, is part of a broader initiative to safeguard children and promote alternative disciplinary measures that focus on counselling and positive reinforcement.

During an interview with some notable media outfits recently, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, emphasized that corporal punishment is strictly prohibited.

“There is a policy here in Lagos and other parts of the country prohibiting teachers from giving corporal punishment to students/pupils,” he stated. The commissioner further explained that the ban on flogging is designed to prevent injuries, fainting, and even fatal incidents among students, while promoting a more constructive approach to behavioural correction.

Instead of physical punishment, the state has adopted counselling as the primary method for addressing misbehaviour. Minor corrective measures such as kneeling, picking up litter, or cutting grass within school premises have also been introduced as part of a positive reinforcement strategy.

“The idea is to bring to the student’s knowledge the reasons he/she must not misbehave. The counselling is basically to correct,” added Alli-Balogun.

The Commissioner also attributed a significant portion of student misbehaviour to poor parental upbringing, urging parents to take a more active role in their children’s lives. He noted that since the ban was enforced, there has been a marked improvement in student discipline, with pupils becoming more aware of the consequences of their actions.

This progressive policy is complemented by the Safeguarding and Child Protection Programme in Schools, launched earlier in 2022, which aims to reinforce child safety and promote a culture of non-violence in educational institutions. By shifting focus from punitive measures to counselling and education, the Lagos State Government hopes to foster an environment where students can learn and grow in a safe and supportive atmosphere.
