Free Antenatal Delivery, Employment Of Qualified Healthcare Workers Key To Our Success

Anambra State Commissioner For Health, Dr. Afam Obidike says the introduction of free Antenatal delivery, employment of qualified healthcare workers by Gov. Charles Soludo’s administration is key to the success recorded in the healthcare of the state.


Dr. Obidike said that the state has recorded no fewer than 15,000 deliveries without any maternal mortality since the introduction of free antenatal and delivery services.

He said this during a Maternal Mortality Review meeting organized by the State Ministry of Health at the Jerome Udoji State Secretariat Complex, Awka.

The meeting was attended by Medical Doctors, Nurses from government, mission and private hospitals in the state.

According to him, this is the second maternal mortality review meeting in the second year and some months of Gov. Soludo has helped them to identify areas of improvement in maternal care which also lead to better health outcomes for mothers.

The Commissioner explained that the meeting was to review maternal mortality, identify potential causes and combating factors, and develop strategies to reduce maternal mortality.

‘It is also to review case presentations of all maternal deaths, discuss findings and discuss ways to enhance the healthcare system and maternal health in Anambra.

“Governor Soludo is passionate about the health needs of Ndi Anambra, hence his huge investment in the sector.

“We are able to facilitate multidisciplinary collaboration were everyone demonstrated their commitment to maternal healthcare quality and patient safety.’’

He promised that the ministry will continue to monitor maternal homes in the state to ensure that they have all the necessary things needed to end maternal mortality in the state.

Earlier, Head of Reproductive Health in the ministry, Dr. Uju Okoye applauded the Commissioner for conceptualizing the review meeting while commending the governor for implementing almost all the recommendations made in their first inaugural review meeting and that they have added neonatal review in the meeting.

She listed free antenatal and delivery services, establishment of blood banks in the three senatorial zones in the state, distribution of anti-shock garments as some of their recommendations which has been implemented by the current administration.

The Chairman of the Maternal Mortality Review meeting, Prof. George Eleje from Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi urged the participants to utilize the knowledge garnered in the training, as well as help to educate other health practitioners to eradicate maternal mortality in the state.
