Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri, has officially welcomed approximately 16,000 fresh students into its academic community during the institution’s 47th matriculation ceremony, held at the Mini Stadium on campus.

Presiding over the event, the Rector, Dr. Basilia Igbokwe, charged the matriculating students to pursue excellence, set clear academic goals, and strive to become proud representatives of the Polytechnic after graduation.

“By the authority vested in me as the Rector, I formally admit you all into the Federal Polytechnic Nekede. Congratulations and welcome to a journey of growth and excellence,” she announced.

Dr. Igbokwe, the institution’s ninth substantive Rector, reassured the new students of the Polytechnic’s unwavering commitment to providing quality education, supported by a serene learning environment, cutting-edge facilities, experienced faculty, and dynamic leadership. She emphasized the school’s mission to nurture exceptional talents vital for Nigeria’s development.

Among recent strides highlighted by the Rector were:

The establishment of a new campus at Abezi Egbema in Ohaji/Egbema LGA,
Renovation of student hostels to ease accommodation pressure,
Revitalization of the campus block industry with modern equipment,
Modernization of the tissue paper and bottled water production units,
Introduction of Computer-Based Testing (CBT) for continuous assessments,
NBTE accreditation for the HND programme in Pharmaceutical Technology.

The matriculation ceremony also featured the oath-taking and formal registration of students. Many of the freshers expressed joy and determination to excel academically.

“I came here because of the Polytechnic’s strong reputation. I’ll work hard to justify my parents’ sacrifices,” a new student pledged.

Student Union Government (SUG) President, Comrade Valentine Ekenne, and Council of Departmental Presidents Chairman, Comrade Donald Norum, commended the Rector for her impactful leadership and encouraged the new intakes to remain focused and diligent.

The event was further highlighted by award presentations to the Rector and scholarships to 21 deserving students, including individuals living with disabilities, early fee payers, and outstanding female students in male-dominated departments—signifying the institution’s inclusive and excellence-driven ethos.
