In a significant move to uphold the integrity of the digital space, the Anambra State Government has launched an aggressive initiative targeting unauthorized Internet Service Providers (ISPs) operating within the state.
This crackdown, spearheaded by the Anambra State Physical Planning Board (ANSPPB) in collaboration with the Anambra State ICT Agency, comes in response to alarming reports of illegal excavations on public roads and sidewalks, as well as the unauthorized installation of communication poles by these ISPs.
Investigations into these activities revealed a concerning trend of operations conducted without the necessary licenses or approvals.
The illegal activities of these unlicensed ISPs present multiple risks to public safety, including potential data breaches and the degradation of service quality, while their unauthorized operations threaten to undermine the efforts of legitimate ISPs registered with the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC), who adhere to proper protocols to ensure reliable internet services for Anambra residents.
According to Chairman of ANSPPB, Barr. Chike Maduekwe, the government asserts that allowing these illegal providers to operate unchecked compromises both public safety and the integrity of the digital market.
He explained that the primary goal of this initiative is to purify the digital environment of Anambra State by ensuring that only certified and properly registered ISPs are allowed to offer services.
Barr. Maduekwe, emphasized the importance of compliance with regulatory standards, stating that it is not about shutting anyone out, but about ensuring everyone plays by the rules, encouraging aspiring ISPs to pursue the appropriate channels.
Complementing the message, Mr. Chukwuemeka Fred Agbata, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Anambra State ICT Agency, stressed that building a secure digital environment begins with accountability, reaffirming the government’s commitment to fostering a safe and competitive digital economy, to ensure that Anambra residents receive dependable and trustworthy internet services devoid of exploitation.
In order to facilitate community involvement, he urged residents to report any suspicious or unlicensed ISP activities through dedicated hotlines, fostering a sense of communal responsibility in safeguarding the state’s digital future.
