The Managing Director of a gas company has been arrested by the Abia State government for damaging a manhole and pedestrian walkway on the newly constructed six-lane Aguiyi Ironsi Boulevard in Umuahia.

This information was revealed by Okey Kanu, the Abia State Commissioner for Information, during a press conference at the Government House in Umuahia.

He stated that the Abia State government would no longer tolerate the deliberate destruction of property intended for public use.

“The state government is taking this opportunity to urge communities, traditional rulers, and youths to take ownership of all government properties within their areas,” Kanu said.

“The government cannot spend billions of Naira to provide necessary infrastructure for the comfort and convenience of citizens while unscrupulous individuals destroy these properties,” he added.

Kanu expressed regret that such acts undermine the government’s efforts to transform Umuahia and Aba into smart cities.

Further explaining the situation, Mr. Kingsley Agomoh, General Manager of the Umuahia Capital Development Agency (UCDA), noted that over 15 manholes have been destroyed along the new six-lane Aguiyi Ironsi Boulevard.

“More than 15 manholes have been removed and destroyed along the Boulevard. This is an issue that no government should tolerate,” Agomoh stated.
