Water Scarcity Hits Nnewi, Awka Residents lament, Because Of Power

Residents of Nnewi community in Anambra State have cried out over the deadly power outage that has now degenerated into a worrisome case of water scarcity.

One, Mrs Ifeoma Eke, who resides in Okpuno Awka Capital City in Anambra state, decried the impact of the current situation on women and children who are saddled with the responsibility of fetching water for household use are lamenting bitterly.

As power outage and epileptic supply bite across the country, residents of Awka, Nnewi and other communities within the State capital territory are lamenting the hardship they are going through in search of potable water for household use.

Some of them, who shared their experiences with our EkweAnaedo regretted that the drop in power supply across the country, has worsened the impact of the current economic hardship on them.

One of them, Mrs Uchenna Azubugo, who resides in Ndiakwu Otolo Nnewi Community, decried the impact of the situation on the men, women and children, who are facing with the challenge of begging for water in their area to cook and do other house chose

“We now need to leave everything we have to do to go and look for water anywhere we see it. In many places, you buy it, one Jerrican for 100 naira.

“You can imagine the impact of the stress on every family. The children are out looking for water when they are expected to get busy with their home works,” Uchenna bemoaned.

A final year student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Amara Chukwudi, likewise a secondary school boy of National Technical School Ndiakwu Otolo Nnewi, was full of frustrations over the situation which had made them to spend unnecessarily searching for water.

“ People now bathed with sachet water no minding the cost of one bag of sachet pure water. There was light and people could not find any means of pumping water in their compound, Remember the price of petrol is equally unfriendly. Nigeria is fast becoming unhabitable”.

A mother of three, Mrs Maria Udeozo, also shared a discomforting tale about the water challenge in her area.

“More regrettably, this is happening at a time that heat is too much. My children could not sleep yesterday. At the same time, power supply had dropped drastically. We need urgent government intervention, honestly,” she concluded.

At the time of filing this report, some children were seen in one of the areas around Okpuno Awka, Ndiakwu Otolo Nnewi trekking distances to search for water in their area instead of being in schools studying.
