A lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Dr. Osita Chinedu, was tragically shot dead on Monday evening in Awka, the capital of Anambra State, by suspected car-snatching criminals.
The incident reportedly occurred around the High Tension area in Aroma at approximately 7 PM. Eyewitnesses recounted that the assailants confronted Dr. Chinedu, demanding his car keys. A struggle ensued, leading to the fatal shooting of the victim, who died on the spot. It remains unclear whether the attackers successfully escaped with the vehicle.
A staff member of UNIZIK, who first alerted colleagues to the incident, urged caution during the festive season. “Please, comrades, let’s prioritize our safety. If they demand your car, give it up—our lives matter more,” the colleague advised.
Reacting with anger and concern, another UNIZIK staff member lamented the worsening insecurity in the state, particularly in the capital city. “A colleague and fellow sports enthusiast was shot dead. This is becoming unbearable. We and our families no longer feel safe.”
