The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has announced that all students must sign a compulsory affidavit of undertaking to refrain from participating in unauthorized protests or demonstrations on campus.
The move comes after a month-long closure due to student protests against power outages.
In a circular issued on Wednesday, the university stated that students must sign the affidavit within two weeks of resumption, failing which their results will be withheld. The affidavit requires students to agree to:
- Abide by university management’s arrangements for electricity supply and utilization
- Pay outstanding school charges
- Refrain from bringing prohibited appliances into halls of residence
- Avoid unruly conduct and unauthorized assemblies or demonstrations
The university’s decision follows a series of student protests against power outages, which led to the closure of the institution on July 4. The university has since addressed the issues, including electricity and water supply, and renovation of halls of residence.
Students are expected to upload the sworn affidavit on their Kofa page and submit a hard copy to their departmental course adviser. Failure to comply will result in withheld results.”
