In the early hours of Wednesday, two soldiers tragically lost their lives when gunmen ambushed troops from the Joint Task Force South East Operation Udoka at a checkpoint along the Umuahia-Owerri Road, situated on the Abia-Imo border.
A statement issued by Lt. Col. Jonah Unuakhalu, on behalf of the Joint Task Force, confirmed that the attacked troops had been stationed at a checkpoint in Umuahia South Local Government Area, Abia State. “During the firefight that ensued, two soldiers paid the ultimate price,” he disclosed.
Lt. Col. Unuakhalu attributed the attack to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), though he withheld further details.
In his account of the incident, the spokesperson noted that the troops successfully repelled the assault, forcing the attackers, who suffered gunshot injuries, to retreat in disarray. The gunmen left behind two vehicles— a Sienna and a Lexus Jeep—used during the attack.
The Joint Task Force appealed to South-East residents, especially those in Abia State, to provide any credible information that could aid in capturing the fleeing suspects. They emphasized that such information would not only aid in bringing the perpetrators to justice but also contribute to efforts to eliminate criminal activities in the region.
Residents with pertinent information are urged to contact Operation UDO KA by dialing 193 and selecting Option 2 on their phones.
Despite the loss, the Army assured the public that Operation Udoka troops remain resolute in their mission. The military reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property in the South-East, adhering to global standards and its rules of engagement.
