A violent confrontation between police operatives and members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), also known as the Shiites, has resulted in the deaths of two police officers and left three others unconscious.
The incident occurred on Sunday in the Wuse area of Abuja.
According to Josephine Adeh, spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, the IMN members launched an unprovoked attack on police personnel at Wuse Junction, near a traffic light.
The attackers wielded machetes, improvised explosive devices, and knives, and destroyed three police patrol vehicles.
FCT Police Commissioner Benneth Igweh has condemned the attack and pledged to bring the perpetrators to justice. Several arrests have been made, and the situation has been brought under control, with normalcy restored to the area.
The police spokesperson stated that the FCT Police Command would provide further updates on the incident in due course.
The attack highlights the ongoing tensions between the IMN and security forces in Nigeria, with the group having been proscribed by the government due to its activities.
