In a thrilling match at the Parc des Princes, Trinity Rodman scored a sublime goal in extra time to secure a 1-0 victory for the United States against Japan in the women’s football quarterfinals at the Paris Olympics.

After a goalless 90 minutes, Rodman’s strike in the first half of extra time sent the US team into the semifinals, where they will face Germany on Tuesday

The US team, led by new manager Emma Hayes, is seeking to win their fifth Olympic gold medal in women’s football. Hayes, who took the helm in May, is coaching her first major tournament.

In other quarterfinal matches, Germany defeated defending champions Canada 4-2 in a penalty shootout, while Brazil upset hosts France 1-0 with a late goal from Gabi Portilho. Brazil will face Spain in the semifinals on Tuesday
