The motive behind this brutal act is believed to be linked to a ritual prescribed by a native doctor, whom Mr. Lawrence had allegedly consulted in pursuit of quick wealth.

The landlady, alerted by Mrs. Lawrence’s screams, intervened but was also injured in the process, suffering deep cuts and losing several teeth. Mrs. Lawrence is currently receiving critical care at the Federal Medical Center, Umuahia, where medical professionals are working tirelessly to address her severe injuries, particularly the damage to her eyes.
