The Egbu community in Owerri North LGA, Imo State, is reeling in shock and grief after four young men lost their lives in a bizarre incident while attempting to evacuate dungs from a sewage pit at Umunwokoji Umuayalu village.
According to eyewitnesses, the four workers took turns entering the pit, but none of them emerged alive.
The first person became trapped, and in a desperate bid to rescue him, the others followed, meeting the same fate.
The bodies of the victims were later recovered and taken to the mortuary, leaving behind devastated families and a community in mourning.
The cause of their deaths remains unknown.
Environmental engineer Sunday Ihekire expressed his condolences, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing safety protocols in hazardous activities.
The incident has left the community shaken, with one resident describing it as a “bad omen.” Among the deceased was a newlywed man with a month-old baby, leaving behind a young family to grapple with the loss.
