The Federal Government has reiterated that President Bola Tinubu’s administration prioritizes food security as a key aspect of its governance.
Aliyu Abdullahi, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, stated that since Tinubu’s inauguration in May 2023, the government has launched several initiatives aimed at ensuring food security across the country.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Monday, Abdullahi emphasized that food security is a central focus of the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
He explained that food security is not only vital for the agriculture sector but also plays a critical role in poverty reduction and fostering gender inclusivity in Nigeria’s economy.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is deeply concerned about Nigeria’s food security situation. He often shares his vision of a Nigeria where no one has to go to bed hungry. We are committed to realizing that vision and working diligently to achieve it,” Abdullahi said.
In recent years, food prices in Nigeria have surged dramatically, making basic food items unaffordable for many.
In response, both the Federal Government and state governments have introduced various measures, including palliative programs aimed at easing the burden on Nigerians.
Shortly after taking office, President Tinubu declared a food security emergency, acknowledging the urgent need to address the issue.
“We will work with our security agencies to safeguard farmlands and protect farmers, ensuring they can work without fear of attacks,” he said.
The president also highlighted the Central Bank of Nigeria’s ongoing support for the agricultural sector, particularly in financing the agricultural value chain.
Additionally, the government has mapped out 500,000 hectares of land to increase the availability of arable land for farming, a move aimed at boosting agricultural production in the country.
