Tension Mount In Community As Police Arrest ‘Dethroned’ Monarch’s Aid, Urges Him To Appear In Court

There is tension In Alor Community, In Idemili South Local Government Area Of Anambra State, following the arrest of one of the cabinet chiefs of the ‘dethroned’ monarch of the area, McAnthony Okonkwo.

Alor Community, is where the former Governor of Anambra State and two term former Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige hails from.

The Arrested Chief, Osita Igbonwa, will be dragged to court next week Wednesday for alleged assault and threat to life by the state police command.

EkweAnaedo, gathered that the Anambra State House Of Assembly Committee on Public Petitions, had invited key stakeholders of the community and the embattled traditional ruler, McAnthony Okonkwo, in respect of a pending petition on the issue of traditional rulership.

They were initially invited on Jan 21, 2024, but Okonkwo did not honour the invitation, the action, that angered the lawmakers who threatened him with bench warrant.

However, a new date was given to him to appear before the committee which was on February 22.2024, but fail to appear before them.

The petition, from one of the High Chiefs in the community, had noted that Okonkwo, who was allegedly ‘dethroned’ by the State High Court about two and half years ago, was still parading himself as a traditional ruler of Alor community, contrary to the verdict and orders of Court.

It was further, gathered by EkweAnaedo, that after the sitting, one of the chiefs of the ‘dethroned ‘monarch rushed to the petitioner and attacked him.

This, warranted the lawmaker, representing Ihiala 1 Constituency , Hon Golden Iloh, to lock the Assembly gate to alert the police who quickly intervened to quell the fracas.

Ahead of the day’s sitting, Okonkwo had presented a written reply to the petition to the state Assembly, stating his own side of the report .

The alleged attacker, Osita Igbonwa, was arrested and detained at the ‘B’ Division of the police command before he was released on bail.

One of the senior police officers who spoke with EkweAnaedo, but pleaded anonymity, said suspect would appear in court next week wednesday to answer to the charges of assault, threat to human life and discretion of the sanctity of the state Assembly complex.

One of the chiefs, (names withheld), said, “I don’t want to be arrested because I was only invited for an agreed amount to accompany Igwe to a function”.

The ‘dethroned’ monarch, had been facing numerous battles in Alor community, with prominent citizens in the area against his emergence and enthronement.
